Why Oak Systems?
When I was about 10 years old, my mother wanted to have an oak tree, to remind her of where she grew up. The only variety of oak hardy enough for the Edmonton area was the Burr Oak. The local tree nurseries let us know that it was a tricky tree to get established, but after that it would thrive here. On their recommendation, we got a several year old sapling delivered in one of those large tree-spade trucks. At 10 years old, this was very impressive.
The tree did well over the next years, growing from it’s original six or seven foot height and one to two inch thick trunk to a massive tree spreading it’s branches far over the front yard. In the first decade, the tree was one of the earliest to shed it’s leaves in the fall, but as the years have gone on, it is now much more brave and retains it’s leaves much later in the season, being one of the last to drop it’s leaves in the neighborhood. We occasionally have arborists check the tree and one of them commented that it was one of the most impressive Burr Oaks they’ve ever seen in Edmonton.
When we were naming Oak Systems, this tree came to mind. It’s had slow but steady growth over the years, and several IT metaphors sprung to mind. It’s roots are like your network- mostly unseen, but a vital and essential system that supports your business. The branches are like a file structure on your server- storing your files in a logical system. It’s strength and resilience are an ideal to build the company to.
As the years have gone by, the tree has started to produce a fine crop of acorns each year, much to the pleasure of the local bird and squirrel population. And with the mild winters we tend to experience now, it seems much easier for these trees to become established. Last year, I realized that one of the squirrels had hidden an acorn in the garden where it had sprouted. I transplanted the tiny seedling to a better location in the yard, where it has been doing well so far! We can’t help but think of this new seedling growing well, just like Oak Systems!
This is why we named our company Oak Systems, and why this particular oak tree is featured on our logo.
